Peace Train

Super High Grade Tablature
Author: Leonard Latest revision: January 21, 2024
Notes: Cat extensively road-tested the song before he even considered attempting to record it in the studio. Even back then Cat repeatedly stated on concerts that he credited this song — which, funny enough, he had actually written on the train — not to himself but to rather as having been given to him by some higher power. First recording attempts were unsatisfactory to Cat, hence the song was scrapped for release on Tea for the Tillerman. It was not until the next album, Teaser and the Firecat, with its first use of a 24-track recording tape for exactly this song, that the studio mix began to feel right. Paul Samwell Smith later recalled the studio sessions as “Cat standing on a chair in the back of the studio shouting “Autoharp”, “Reverb on guitar!” and trying to conduct as we mixed it.” Cat always felt that his performances of the song before large audiences, usually as a show-closer, were even more energetic still. The intro sequence and riffs of this world-hit are, of course, unforgettable, but it is perhaps the song’s often-overlooked outro, transcribed here (or anywhere really) for the first time, that deserves more time in the spotlight for its musicality. There are other neat tricks hidden in the song apart from the locomotion-like rhythm with the palm-muting, such as the triplet-strumming in the fourth verse (mind the exlamation mark in the guitar tab there!) that discharges into one greatly accentuated downwards strum in the same verse line afterwards.
Each guitar tab is the author’s own work and represents his or her own interpretation of the song.
Visitors may use the guitar tabs offered here only for private study, scholarship, or research.

LYRICS ONLY
===========

Now I've been happy lately thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be something good has begun
Oh I've been smiling lately dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be some day it's going to come

'Cause out on the edge of darkness there rides a peace train
Oh peace train, take this country, come take me home again
Now I've been smiling lately thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be something good has begun

Oh peace train sounding louder, glide on the peace train
Come on the peace train
Yes peace train, holy roller, everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on the peace train

Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too
'Cause it's getting nearer, it soon will be with you
And come and join the living, it's not so far from you
And it's getting nearer, soon it will all be true

Oh peace train...

Now I've been crying lately thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating, why can't we live in bliss?
'Cause out on the edge of darkness there rides a peace train
Oh peace train, take this country, come take me home again

Oh peace train...
